Defining Uh

When somebody shoots your arm you need to flex it every now and then in the advanced stages of healing, possibly as an emotional assurance that it still works.

I need to flex my brain.

Question is, am i in that stage of healing?

I was at work a few hours ago, killing time by chatting. You can call it squandering
(That's a word I've been using a lot lately, by the way) the agents' allowed access to Google Talk while possible. While in the process of coming up with a productive topic of discussion with a good friend of mine the word "uh" was mentioned. What ensued was a topic worthy of my blogging attention.

When you think about it 99% of the known world (mine) would resort to uh for a host of reasons. This is the approach I decided to go by for this article.

Uh may be used to stall the flow of a conversation conveniently for you to compose a better reply in you head. You may interpret it as "Shut up and let me think" with the right timing and volume.

Uh may be used as a reflex reaction the announcement of implemented mandatory rest day overtime. If pronounced precise enough it will have a sarcastic neanderthal tinge to it.

5 bucks says you were probably trying it out after reading it.

Uh, when coupled with huh, can be used as a juvenile statement of concurrence or approval. The overall emotion behind the word, be it bubbly or sarcastic, depends once again on timing, and tone.

Uh is used as a substitute for words during sudden situations overwhelming with emotions or feelings. I can think of shock, awe, sexual bliss, and over-the-top happiness or sadness.

15 bucks says you were anticipating sex to be mentioned somewhere in this article eventually.

An undisclosed friend of mine uses uh in a unique way to spurn what was just mentioned by whoever he was talking to, usually in the presence of other people.

And that's as much as I can think of after 4 hours of sleep. Please feel free to contribute. I'll be... 'flexing' more often.

That didn't sound very nice. Yech.

Till next time.
