"Whoever rewards evil for good, evil will not depart from his house." Proverbs 17:3
This verse has more in it than we initially observe. It is easy for us to reward good for the good that we perceive, but are we just as graceful even if what happens to us may not meet our own established standards of what is good?
"He who has a deceitful heart finds no good, and he who has a perverse tongue falls into evil." Proverbs 17:20
The secret is not in how we react, but in our hearts. Remember, we cannot give what we do not have, and if we have bitterness and pride in our hearts, chances are we would reward good with a trace (if not intentional smudges) of bitterness and pride.
"The refining pot is for silver and the furnace for gold, but the LORD tests the hearts." Proverbs 17:3
Once again, we are presented with another pressing need to hold our relationship with God through Jesus Christ above all else. The closer we get to Him by obedience, the more He searches our hearts, taking out even the most stubborn of attitudes that we have.
"A merry heart does good, like medicine, but a broken spirit dries the bones." Proverbs 17:22
Receive Christ, and respond well.
