Proverbs 15:4 A wholesome tongue is a tree of life: but perverseness in it breaks the spirit.
Picture two equally competent and prepared Law graduates taking the Bar exam. Bear with me on this as I believe the rest of the skit should be in tagalog.
(nakalabas sa room pagkatapos ng exam)
"Bro, hirap nun ah. Tingin mo pasado ka?"
"Tsk. Bagsak ako dyan. Sigurado."
(pagkabigay ng resulta)
"Uy pasado ako! Tignan nga natin yung score mo..."
"Bagsak yan."
"Bagsak nga."
"Sabi ko sa 'yo eh."
(End skit)
Eh malamang. Sinabi mo eh.
Many people do not realize that they speak the circumstance that stumbles them. I believe accidents happen because of careless words spoken. It's very true that sin can start off from a single perverse and disobedient word coming out of the tongue. We are capable and indeed susceptible to doing the sin that comes out of our lips. We can talk freely about sex, and before you know it, there you are, acting what fantasies creep in.
(yes, that is my struggle. But our God's strength is truly made perfect in our weakness. To God be all the glory)
The devil just needs a small opening for him to hit you with all he's got. Let us not underestimate our enemy; he has more than 2000 years of experience in tempting, even going so far as to tempt Yeshua three times in the desert.
Beloved, let us also remember that it is what we say that matters when we are confronted with temptation or tribulation.
Proverbs 18:21 "Death and life are in the power of the tongue..."
We should really take this verse seriously. The smallest word that comes out of our lips has the power to make or break relationships. It has the power to save or destroy a life.
You do not need to be in authority for you to see that what comes out of your mouth has power.
Matthew 15:11 "What defiles a person is not what goes into the mouth; it is what comes out of the mouth that defiles a person."
What, then, are we to say when tempted or tried?
Let me say it again - I say it again because I say it to myself... Again, and again, and again if I need to. Return to what the Word says, and respond as Yeshua responded, each and every time He was tempted: by saying "It is written."
Bounce back with what the Word says, and stand on the promises of God. Even when you fall, you can still claim the Word, as it is mentioned in Isaiah 1:18:
Isaiah 1:18 Come, let's consider your options," says the LORD. "Though your sins have stained you like the color red, you can become white like snow; though they are as easy to see as the color scarlet, you can become white like wool.
Ever hear of the saying 'bringing a knife to a gun fight?'
A Christian without a firm knowledge of the Bible is like a man bringing a 900-megaton nuclear warhead to a gun fight. But he doesn't know how to use it.
Turn your tongue wholesome through learning more about the Word, and be a 'tree of life' - encouraging and blessing other people and subsequently, yourself.
Be a blessing by speaking blessing. All for the glory of God's Name.
