The first thing that I appreciated about this picture was the sky. You'd think the whole area on the other side of the church (and down a probable hill) was on fire. Really cool-looking fire, for that matter. I think that the bare tree adds to the desolate feeling of the picture.
I'm guessing that the photographer used shot/center-weighted metering and left the dark all around to frame the church and tree. Awesome shot. Maybe something to try when shooting next time...
